NIHR participates in Annual Meeting of the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI)

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), in the presence of Ms. Maria Khouri, Chairperson of the NIHR, and Chancellor Mr. Yasser Shahin, NIHR’s Assistant Secretary-General, participated in the annual meeting of the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) held at the UN Palace in Geneva.

The meeting was opened by Prof. Beate Rudolf, Chairman of the GANHRI, who stated that the GANHRI is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, with a membership of 110 national institutions from all over the world, as well as the 25th anniversary of the promulgation of the Paris Principles governing the function of the national institutions.

Subsequently, the new members of the office of the GANHRI were adopted, namely the national human rights institutions from Africa, i.e. Malawi, Cameron, Mauritania and Rwanda, Asia and Pacific Forum, i.e. Afghanistan, Australia, India and Mongolia, the Americas, i.e. Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Mexico, and Europe, i.e. Croatia, Finland, Georgia and Germany.  Mr. Vladlen Stefanov, Chief of the National Institutions, Regional Mechanisms and Civil Society Section of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), also presented a summary of the most important works recently carried out by the Section.

During the meeting, the GANHRI’s financial report and budget study were reviewed and approved.  The representative of Moroccan National Human Rights Council also stated that Morocco would host the next international conference of the GANHRI in October.  The GANHRI’s action plan for 2018 was also presented during the meeting.
